Sesshomaru and his mom are also almost always in the humanoid forms. I always guessed that the humanoid form requires some minimal life energy/ demon energy to maintain which must have slowly dissipated after his death and his dead body reverted to original form. My understanding is that inu hanyo don't have them naturally because they can't transform into the giant dog, like Sessh, Toga and Sesshomaru's mom can.
